Pendant lamp as the peak of our ceramic craftsmanship
I have always been fascinated by light and even collected various handmade lamps from different places when I traveled a lot (and it was so). From the very beginning of KERRA, we wanted to move into interiors and art objects, and pendant lamps are precisely the most real art object and the most interior ceramic product. But we wanted it in a whisper, we constantly lacked courage, they say it is difficult and out of time, especially – we had to learn ceramic craftsmanship to implement it qualitatively. So the time has come, right now during the war I understand that there is nothing to postpone and if Ukrainian pendant lamps from the KERRA brand are to see the light, then it is necessary to do it right now, especially since we have prepared for this.
Pendant chandeliers: complexity of manufacture
Firstly, size, these are large products of complex shape. Only Hand Drums Darbuka can compete. Secondly, glazing. This is a separate challenge, since glazing by hand is very difficult to do so in such a way that the number of layers is the same everywhere, because when applied, the glaze looks like putty, which is also a completely different color. Moreover, this color differs from what will be after firing as strikingly as red differs from blue. For example, the Laguna pendant ceiling lamp is grey before firing and blue after firing. But the production of the ceramic lamps themselves was only the beginning: then the real hard work for a ceramist is not a ceramic quest at all: developing the suspension itself. To make a reliable pendant lamp, you need to select the highest quality fittings and understand the principle of its operation with specialists, and at this plot twist, you need to move on to the next paragraph.
How did you start making ceramic lamps in the first place?
It’s good that we first encountered the experience of manufacturing a wholesale batch for a design bureau and it was there that we gained experience in what pendant lamps are, how they are made, how they are assembled, how they are hung, who does it and where. It was there that we learned the most complex technique of cutting a grid of holes in the body of the product so that light could pass through them, which we implemented on our models. After working with new and new foreign models for several years, we realized that we wanted to implement our own designs and concepts, again taking into account my great love for light and everything that shines. It took us serious investments and six months to release the first collection of special, complex Ukrainian handmade lamps from KERRA.
Where can you hang pendant lamps?
In fact, we immediately calculated where to hang our pendant lamps, fantasized where we would hang them ourselves. It’s cool that our first two orders were completely polar and opposite: two anniversary stones were hung on the veranda of a large house in the suburbs of Kyiv, and a large handmade bubble pendant lamp was hung in the kitchen, and it was especially cool that we were present at the installation and were able to see the first shots when it was just installed. But as a rule, our ceramic chandeliers are installed in bedrooms, halls and are often given as gifts, because they act as bright, collectible art objects, which is what we strived for when developing them. We guarantee their reliability and durability, because everything is made with a margin, and are also ready to help and advise during installation, although we provide all the necessary installation materials in the kit with our pendant lamps.
