This story is not really about the sand and the sea, but rather about a specific line, a specific place where they meet. It is this long, almost infinite line of contact, where the sea keeps licking and licking the sand, that really worries me. It is constantly changing, isn’t it? No two waves that break on the shore are the same, the Greeks said. Do they? I am really worried about this line.

If these waves break on the shore endlessly, why can’t the sea lick the sand at least once in the same way as it did at other times, exactly the same. Can a particular, drawn-out pattern of the coastline perfectly match a pattern of that coastline made at another time? To be honest, I don’t know for sure (but most likely not), because I can’t even make two identical cups that reflect that pattern of the coastline, and that should be much easier. However, it doesn’t work, so they all flow from the sea onto the sand in completely different ways.
